What is ActiveSync?
ActiveSync is a software application that allows you to synchronize information between your account on our Exchange servers with your local Outlook client and mobile devices. ActiveSync is integrated into Exchange Server 2007 and this provides you with the option of directly synchronizing mail, contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes between your mobile device and your Exchange account. Some mobile devices do not support sync capabilities for all items. Most devices do cover the main three items; mail, contacts, and calendars. Some devices like the iPhone do not support synchronization of tasks and notes. Consult the manufacturer of your device to be certain which items are supported.
ActiveSync Requirements
For your SBS email account to have ActiveSync abilities your mailbox template would need to be one of the following.
- SBS Mobile Email + Outlook
- SBS Mobile Email + MAPI
- SBS Mobile Email
Mailbox templates such as "SBS Basic Email" do not come with ActiveSync enabled. To enable ActiveSync for a user that has a Basic Email account you would need to upgrade the mailbox template to one of the ones listed above.
ActiveSync Setup
Connecting your mobile device to your mobile device will differ depending on the device you are using.
iPhone Setup
The iPhone uses ActiveSync to sync your mail, contacts, and calendar. To setup your iPhone you would need to follow the steps outlined in our iPhone & iPod Touch wiki article.
